Literary, photographic, artistic and culinary trekking. The “Incontri d’Alt(r)a Quota” (Other High Altitude Encounters) organised by the UNESCO Dolomites Foundation will be back in the World Heritage mountain huts during the summer of 2021.

Demand for “Incontri d’Alt(r)a Quota”

For many, the pandemic has led to forced distancing from the rugged cliff faces, valleys and forests of the Dolomites and the well-being they can generate. The summer of 2021, COVID-19 permitting, will present an opportunity to experience all of this with respect for the places and people who live there. The UNESCO Dolomites Foundation has been working for some time on various fronts such as studying flows and their impact (see, for example, the study conducted in the hotspots of Lake Braies and Tre Cime) and conducting information campaigns for a more aware type of tourism specifically to decrease the impact of mass tourism in the fragile Dolomites environment.

Discover the uniqueness of the Dolomites

But there is also a direct way to promote responsible visits to the World Heritage Site. And that is to send visitors off with people who can help deepen the uniqueness of the experience; these could be mountain guides, nature guides, producers, writers, photographers, cooks, artists and, of course, mountain hut managers. The “Incontri d’Alt(r)a Quota” (Other High Altitude Encounters), which the UNESCO Dolomites Foundation is organising for the fifth year, have this as their goal. The scheduling of the programme is nearly complete, and its keynote, of course, will be compliance with anti-COVID-19 regulations including the need to limit the maximum number of participants, which may vary depending on the proposed activity. We therefore appeal to visitors to keep up to date on the information and book in time, because the encounters are decidedly “Incontri d’Alt(r)a Quota” from all points of view; in fact, we will be accompanied by writer Matteo Righetto on a literary trek to the Città di Fiume Mountain Hut (BL) at the foot of the north face of Mount Pelmo, and Michelin-starred chef Alessandro Gilmozzi will introduce us to the use of wild herbs from the Dolomites in the kitchen of the Pordenone Mountain Hut in the Friulian Dolomites. We will also get acquainted with the extraordinary watercolours of painter Silvia De Bastiani at the Antermoia Mountain Hut (TN) and the technical and aesthetic experience of photographer Moreno Geremetta at the Alpe di Tires Mountain Hut (BZ). As always, the encounters will be an opportunity to get to know the mountains in an unusual and enriching way and to strengthen ties between the professionals, enthusiasts and operators who live in and with the Dolomites.
