“Living in the mountains: what’s changing”. The ninth edition of the Dolomites Mountain School promises an intense program filled with reflections, thought-provoking questions – some of them challenging – and a growing urgency for discussions that can help to find the answers that will guide the decisions that will shape the future of mountain communities.

PRESENTATION IN UDINE ON 11 APRIL

The “Dolomites Mountain School” is organised by the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia in partnership with the UNESCO Dolomites Foundation, the University of Udine, Magnifica Comunità di montagna Dolomiti Friulane, Cavallo and Cansiglio, Comunità di montagna della Carnia and ASCA / Leggimontagna – Cortomontagna. The presentation will take place at 5:00 p.m. on Friday 11 April in the Gusmani Hall of Palazzo Antonini of the University of Udine. Speakers will include Rector Roberto Pinton, UNESCO Dolomites Foundation Director Mara Nemela and School Coordinator Gianpaolo Carbonetto, moderated by Pierpaolo Zanchetta from the Regional Biodiversity Service of the autonomous region of Friuli Venezia Giulia. As per tradition, the presentation will also feature a lectio magistralis: Professor Adriano Favole, an expert in cultural anthropology at the University of Turin, will discuss “The Uncultivated: Toward an Ecology of Relationships”.

TERRITORIAL MEETINGS

Landscape culture and its management tools will be at the centre of the meetings that will take place on the territory from May to October 2025, aimed at bringing up to date, first of all, the professionals of the public administration and the private sector directly dealing with present and future landscape related challenges. The first meeting will be in Tramonti di Sopra on Friday 16 May from 9.30 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the multifunctional hall of via Monte Rest street. Participants will be able to debate on the topic of “Escapes, returns and expectations, how the population is changing”. The second appointment will be at the same time of Friday 13 June at the “L’Alpina” hall in Comeglians and will address the sensitive issue of “Guaranteeing health away from hospitals”. The “Dolomites Mountain School” will then resume again after the summer on Friday 26 September at the Ciasa dai Fornés in Forni di Sopra, where the discussions will deal with music, focusing on “The soundtrack of the high lands”, before closing on Friday 31 October at the Priuso Conference Hall in Socchieve with discussions about “The transformation of the mountain hut from a support point to a destination”.

The past nine years have shown that these meetings are opportunities not only for education and training but also for confrontation and the sharing of best practices. This link will give you an idea of the format and content covered last year. You will find videos of the 2024 edition dedicated to the topic of: “Collaboration between people and territories to give the mountains a new lease of life”.
