Geotrekking in the World Heritage Site Parks

The desire to get back into our hiking boots is growing stronger and stronger, and like every summer the UNESCO Dolomites Foundation offers opportunities for walking together at the discovery of the World Heritage Site. This year, the focus will be on the geology of Natural Parks.

Walk with us through the history of the Earth

For years, the UNESCO Dolomites Foundation has been proposing a series of initiatives aimed at helping visitors experience the mountain with a calm and collected approach, so that they can better understand the reasons behind the UNESCO recognition, the rules to follow for a safe mountain experience, the daily challenges of those who care for these territories – even at high altitudes, such as our mountain hut managers -, and the importance of reading the landscape beyond its “Instagrammable” beauty. After various editions of “Incontri d’Alt(r)a quota” (High-Altitude Encounters of Another Kind), and after the #mountainhutlife experiences, this year’s focus will be entirely on the geological landscape. An experience that will be all the more fascinating thanks to the contribution of experts, geologists, alpine guides and mid-mountain guides, and the collaboration of the Natural Parks of the area, the true guardians of biodiversity and the Outstanding Universal Value of the World Heritage Site.

The Calendar

Everything will start on 17 July with the Sass de Putia circular tour in the Puez-Odle Natural Park (sold out), with geologists and experts from the Autonomous Province of Bolzano – South Tyrol. The next step will be 22 August, starting at the Maniago mountain hut in the Friulan Dolomites Natural Park. After trekking in the heart of Val Zemola, we will reach the Duranno peak together with geologist Antonio Cossutta and mid-mountain guide Laura Olivotto. The third appointment will be at the Adamello-Brenta Global Geopark Natural Park on 27 August. While climbing our way up to the Alimonta mountain hut, we will enjoy listening to the tales of geologist Riccardo Tommasone of MUSE of Trento, park representative Giuseppe Alberti, and alpine guide Simone Elmi. Finally, our focus will shift to the glacial cirques and other geological peculiarities of the Ampezzo Dolomites. On 4 September, we will head to the Biella mountain hut accompanied by the Director of the Natural Park of the Ampezzo Dolomites Michele Da Pozzo, geologist Emiliano Oddone and mid-mountain guide Laura Olivotto.

This activity is part of the project “Capacity building. Strengthening the social and regional capital of the Dolomites World Heritage Site (WHS) for lasting and sustainable development of local communities”, established with the support of Fondo Comuni Confinanti.
