Mindful in the mountains: a unified message from Belluno

On 13 May at Palazzo Piloni, headquarters of the Belluno Provincial Administration, the Belluno Dolomites DMO Foundation, with the support of the Province of Belluno, AGRAV, AULSS 1 Dolomites, CAI Veneto, the UNESCO Dolomites Foundation, the Veneto Mountain Guides and the Veneto Dolomites Delegation of Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico Veneto, presented the “Montagna Consapevole” (Mindful in the mountains) project.

Knowledge and caution, for an authentic experience of the mountain

This initiative is part of the UNESCO Dolomites Foundation’s Network for the Promotion of  Sustainable Tourism, coordinated by the Province of Belluno. It targets all mountain visitors, with the aim of promoting a culture of responsibility and preparedness. The Province of Belluno strongly supported this communication project, naturally inspired by the good practice initiated in Trentino through the #prudenzainmontagna project, to which the UNESCO Dolomites Foundation has been committed from the very beginning.

In this initial phase, the project takes shape within the official tourism promotion portal visitdolomitibellunesi.com, where visitors can browse 11 basic tips that apply throughout the year. They can then explore specific thematic areas – one for summer and one for winter – that delve into the key aspects of responsible and informed outdoor activities: from reading weather and avalanche bulletins to choosing the right equipment, understanding one’s own limits, and recognizing the importance of relying on certified professionals such as alpine guides and mid-mountain escorts. All content, clear and accessible, is available in three languages to reach both national and international audiences.

Respect enhances hospitality

As Roberto Padrin, President of the Province of Belluno, noted during the press conference: “The #montagnaconsapevole project stems from a simple but essential idea: promoting a respectful and cautious approach to the mountains, protecting visitors and enhancing the territory. A goal that we can only achieve through collaboration among all the stakeholders who have contributed their expertise, experience, and shared vision. The Province of Belluno, as coordinator of the Network for the Promotion of Sustainable Tourism of the UNESCO Dolomites Foundation, strongly supported this shared initiative, drawing inspiration from the good practices already implemented in Trentino. This collaboration is the true strength of the project: bringing together institutions, associations, professionals and communities, to build a more welcoming and aware mountain environment. Only in this way, can we convey to visitors the authentic value of our Dolomites, a natural but also human heritage, to be experienced and enjoyed responsibly.”

This activity is part of the project “Capacity building. Strengthening the social and regional capital of the Dolomites World Heritage Site (WHS) for lasting and sustainable development of local communities”, established with the support of Fondo Comuni Confinanti.
