Three days in May exploring the future of the Dolomites: registration now open

From 7 to 9 May in Trento, the OECD Center (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), in collaboration with the UNESCO Dolomites Foundation will be running a capacity-building event entitled: “Ready for the future: opportunities and challenges for sustainable development of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site”, an initiative related to the Foundation’s Training and Scientific Research Network, which is coordinated by the Autonomous Province of Trento through the TSM|STEP School for Regional and Landscape Management. The three-day event invites participants to discuss the future of an area that is changing from a climatic, demographic and economic perspective, in order to identify sustainable development horizons.

Who is it aimed at?

The event targets economic operators whose business is closely tied to the local area of the World Heritage Site, along with managers and planners working in the field of protected areas and regional and provincial public services.

Strategic dialogue

Everybody present will be invited to contribute in relation to the many challenges defining the future of the Dolomites, with the need to balance sustainable development of the valleys and the importance of active conservation of the World Heritage Site. A mutual-learning-based approach is essential for this reason. Morning sessions will feature key international speakers, while the afternoons will be dedicated to workshops geared towards the sharing of best practices and strategic approaches between participants.

Training and future

The programme is structured to include reflection on the relationship between global megatrends and local challenges, and the impact of climate change, demographic transformation and technological progress on local ecosystems, and to forecast future developments rooted in best practices and the case studies presented by event participants. The first day will focus on the outlook for the future and strategic planning for resilience. The second day will explore sustainable development goals for mountain areas and climate change. The final day will zoom in on local development and demographic changes. The full programme is available on the OECD website.
