Two distant worlds, but only in appearance. Two sites recognised by UNESCO for their Outstanding Universal Value. Two environments that the Merano photographer Georg Tappeiner and his travelling companion, light, have portrayed in the extraordinary shots that will be on display from 26 March to 24 May at the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum in Munich, under the patronage of the Consulate General of Italy in Munich and with the support of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano – South Tyrol, the Unesco Dolomites Foundation and Staschitz Print Studio.
LAND AND WATER
The Dolomite region must have looked just like this, like the Wadden Sea, when between 217 and 199 million years ago it became a vast muddy plain, regularly flooded by the sea, and the slow accumulation of enormous piles of sediment began. There is no need for imagination, then, when standing before the 450 km of mesolittoral zone, tidal flats and wetlands that stretch across the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark and which were declared a World Heritage Site on 26 June 2009, in the same session that confirmed the inclusion of the Dolomites on the World Heritage List.
TAPPEINER AS AN INTERPRETER OF UNIVERSAL VALUES
Beyond the many points of convergence, it will above all be the extraordinary images of Georg Tappeiner that will speak during the exhibition EPHEMERIS. Dolomites | Wadden Sea. Photographs by Georg Tappeiner staged in Munich. The opening is scheduled for Wednesday 25 March 2026 at 6.00 pm and the following day, at 5.30 pm, the artist himself will accompany guests on a guided tour among “captivating shots that enchant through light and emotion, recalling the encounter between archaic nature and human perception.”
This activity is part of the project “Capacity building. Strengthening the social and regional capital of the Dolomites World Heritage Site (WHS) for lasting and sustainable development of local communities”, established with the support of Fondo Comuni Confinanti.
