UNESCO Dolomites Foundation

On May 13th 2010, following a specific commitment made to UNESCO to guarantee effective and coordinated management of the Dolomites World Heritage Site, the Provinces and Regions involved (Provinces of Belluno, Bolzano, Pordenone, Trento and Udine, and the two Regions Friuli Venezia Giulia and Veneto) established the Dolomiti – Dolomiten – Dolomites – Dolomitis UNESCO Foundation .

The Foundation, which is the single representative both in relation to the Italian Ministry of the Environment and the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, has the task of promoting dialogue and collaboration between Regional and Provincial Authorities that manage and administrate the areas included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, each within the scope of its own legislation.

Administrative and management powers therefore remain with the Provinces and Regions, in accordance with applicable laws, while the Foundation performs an essential role for the coordination and harmonisation of management policies for the Dolomites Property, with the goal of developing a shared strategy, referred to as the “Overall Management Strategy for the Property”.

The Foundation faces a great challenge due to the complexity of the Dolomites Property, including its linguistic, cultural and administrative diversity, which is unparalleled by any other UNESCO World Heritage Sites. On this basis, the Foundation can boast a unique status as the first entity of its kind, specially created to promote the sustainable development of an area that is also historically highly diverse.

To promote dialogue and the participation of all parties involved in the management of the Dolomites World Heritage Site, the UNESCO Dolomites Foundation has a Board of Supporters. This body is open to all natural or legal persons, public or private, that share the aims of the Foundation and wish to contribute to the Organisations activities.
