The introduction of the Geotrail last month sparked a great deal of interest in this new way of visiting the World Heritage Site: a journey through space and time to discover the geological significance of the Dolomites.

A sneak preview of the video

First came the four guidebooks providing all the scientific information you need for exploring the geological eras, as well as logistical information for your journey through the Dolomites, all in plain language.

Now, you can also preview a video taken from the point of view of a traveller immersed in some of the landscapes covered by the Geotrail, which crosses each of the nine systems of the Dolomite World Heritage Site. The video aims at presenting a unified image of the serial asset; the Dolomites are characterised by countless distinct features, especially in terms of geological evidence, but as a whole, they tell one great story that began 250 million years ago, during the Triassic period.

The project

The project is a follow-up to the initiative launched by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano – Alto Adige which led to the publication of the first volume that guides hikers from the Bletterbach Gorge to the Sexten Dolomites. Coordinated by the UNESCO Dolomites Foundation, it has been extended across the entire Dolomites World Heritage Site covering a total of 47 stages:

  • Volume 1: from Giudicarie to Val di Non, 6 stages
  • Volume 2: from Bletterbach to the Sexten Dolomites, 10 stages
  • Volume 3: from the Sexten Dolomites to Monte Pelmo, 21 stages
  • Volume 4: Friulian Dolomites and d’Oltre Piave, 10 stages (scheduled for publication in Spring of 2022)

Sure-footedness, experience of the mountains, a reasonable level of fitness and stamina are all prerequisites for attempting the trail.
