#MOUNTAINHUTLIFE for a more informed visit to the mountains
The calendar of events to take place between July and October across the various areas of the Dolomites World Heritage Site has been presented at Palazzo Piloni, home to the offices of the Provincial government of Belluno. The events will see managers of mountain huts discuss their daily work, in practical and motivational terms.
The programme of events organised by the UNESCO Dolomites Foundation welcomes a series of special guests to speak about how tourism is changing in the Dolomites. Discussions will range from the effects of the climate crisis on the landscape to the importance of a prudent and informed approach when visiting the mountains, also exploring what it means to live in the Dolomites today more generally.
The idea of educating visitors about the practical aspects, daily difficulties, and profound motivations that animate the work mountain-hut managers is the result of an extended process initiated by the UNESCO Dolomites Foundation together with managers of mountain huts in the Dolomites World Heritage Site, and represents the natural progression of the #mountainhutlife social media campaign, run in recent years in collaboration with managers to raise awareness of visitors about the context in which they find themselves and the opportunities and limitations of their requests.
By involving not only hut managers but also Alpine Guides, rescue personnel, geologists, botanists, glaciologists, geographers and philosophers, the aim is to transmit the idea that people can engage with the mountains in a moderated and measured way, immersing themselves in an environment that already contains everything required for an authentic experience, with hut managers serving as primary interpreters of this experience.
Events at the mountain huts will be hosted by Flavio Faoro, journalist, author and curator of numerous initiatives focused on the mountains. Here is a detailed list, including three geotreks:
